Ten Nigerian States Celebrate 35th Anniversary Today

On August 27, 2026, ten of Nigeria's 36 states are commemorating their 35th anniversary, as they were established on the same date in 1991 during the administration of then-Military President General. The states celebrating this milestone are Abia, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Jigawa, Kebbi, Osun, Taraba, and Yobe.

Abia State, created from the old Imo State, has Umuahia as its capital and is known for the Ariaria International Market in Aba. Anambra State, carved from old Anambra State, has Awka as its capital and is recognized for its business and educational traditions.

Delta State, formed from Bendel State, is headquartered in Asaba and is significant for its oil reserves. Edo State, also from Bendel State, has Benin City as its capital, known for its historical significance.

Enugu State emerged from old Anambra State, with Enugu as its capital, historically a coal-mining hub. Other states include Jigawa, Kebbi, Osun, Taraba, and Yobe, each with unique characteristics and contributions.
