Nigeria Ranks 56th in Global Poverty by GDP-PPP

In a 2026 ranking by Global Finance magazine, Nigeria is listed as the 56th poorest country in the world based on GDP per capita at purchasing power parity, with a figure of $9,532.92. This represents a decline from its 44th position in the 2025 ranking.

The ranking indicates that nine of the ten lowest-ranked countries are in Africa, with Burundi at the bottom with a GDP per capita of $994.23, followed by the Central African Republic and South Sudan. Other African countries in the bottom ten include Mozambique, Malawi, Somalia, Liberia, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The report also notes significant changes from the previous year, including Burundi moving from second to first place and South Sudan dropping from first to third. The findings underscore the economic difficulties faced by many countries in Africa, with the continent accounting for the majority of those at the bottom of the GDP-per-capita ranking.
