Burundi Ranked World's Poorest Country by Global Finance

Global Finance Magazine has ranked Burundi as the world's poorest country, with a GDP per capita of $994.23, based on purchasing power parity (PPP). The ranking indicates that several African countries are at the bottom of the global economic table, with the Central African Republic and South Sudan following at $1,437.72 and $1,467.19, respectively.

The World Bank reports that nearly 90% of South Sudan's population lives below the poverty line. Other countries in the bottom ten include Yemen, Mozambique, Malawi, Somalia, Liberia, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which ranks last at $2,032.68.

The magazine attributes the economic struggles of these nations to factors such as armed conflict, political instability, weak infrastructure, and climate vulnerability. Burundi's ongoing recovery from a civil war (1993-2005) is noted, with most of its population engaged in subsistence farming and lacking access to basic services.

The International Monetary Fund projects a 4% economic growth for Burundi by 2026.
