Nigeria Ranked 56th Among World’s Poorest Countries

Nigeria has been ranked 56th among the world’s 60 poorest countries by GDP per capita at purchasing power parity, as reported in a 2026 ranking by Global Finance magazine. The country’s GDP per capita is recorded at $9,532.92, reflecting a significant drop from its 44th position in the 2025 ranking.

The report indicates that nine of the ten lowest-ranked countries are in Africa, with Yemen being the only non-African country in that group. Burundi is at the bottom of the list with the lowest GDP per capita of $994.23, followed by the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

The rankings adjust for cost of living and inflation, providing a clearer picture of economic wellbeing. Other African nations also feature prominently in the lower half of the ranking, with Niger, Sudan, and Burkina Faso among those listed.

The report highlights significant shifts in positions compared to the previous year, with Nigeria falling 12 places.
