Nigeria Ranked 56th Among World's Poorest Countries in 2026

In a 2026 assessment published by Global Finance magazine, Nigeria has been ranked 56th among the world’s 60 poorest countries, with a gross domestic product per capita based on purchasing power parity of $9,532.92. This marks a decline from its 44th position in the 2025 ranking.

The GDP per capita figure adjusts economic output per person for differences in living costs and inflation but does not directly measure household income or living standards. Burundi is identified as the poorest country with a GDP per capita of $994.23, followed by the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

Notably, nine of the ten lowest-ranked countries are in Africa, underscoring the continent's persistent issues with poverty, conflict, and limited economic opportunities. The assessment reveals significant shifts from 2025, with Burundi moving to first place and Nigeria dropping 12 places.

Other African countries also featured prominently in the ranking, reflecting ongoing economic challenges.
