Man Remanded in Ghana Over Foiled Bank Robbery Plot

Okechukwu Augustine has been remanded by a Circuit Court in Ghana following his alleged involvement in a foiled plot to rob three banks in the Labone area of Accra. He was remanded on Monday and is scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday.

Augustine was arrested last Thursday after the Ghana Police Service reported that they had thwarted a planned attack on branches of GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. The police received intelligence at approximately 10:45 AM on August 13, 2026, indicating that a gang was preparing to attack these banks.

Upon deployment, police spotted the suspected robbers in two vehicles near the banks. One vehicle fled, leading to a chase where Augustine was apprehended, while two other suspects were killed in a shoot-out.

The police recovered two vehicles and a blow pistol. However, GCB Bank later denied any robbery attempt at its Labone branch, asserting that no breach occurred and that the branch remains secure.
