Ghana Secures GI Status for Kente Cloth, Protecting Cultural Heritage

Ghana has officially granted Geographical Indication (GI) status to Kente cloth, safeguarding it from imitation and misuse. The move aims to protect the traditional handwoven fabric's authenticity and ensure that only genuine Ghanaian weavers can produce and profit from it.

The recognition was made by Ghana's Registrar General in September 2025, with support from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This initiative not only preserves the cultural heritage of Kente but also enhances the value of local production and provides global market access for Ghanaian artisans.
