Gombe Emir's Cup Returns with VAR Technology to Elevate Grassroots Football Standards

The Gombe Emir's Cup, a renowned football competition in Nigeria, is set to return after several decades with the incorporation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to elevate the professionalism and officiating standards. The chairman of the Gombe Emir's Football Competition, Ahm Shuaibu Gara, revealed the plan to deploy VAR during the tournament, setting a new benchmark for community-based football events in Nigeria.

The competition, scheduled to commence during the Ramadan fast and Sallah festival, will involve nine referees who will undergo VAR training. The tournament, aimed at promoting unity, talent discovery, and social engagement among youth at the grassroots level, seeks to curb social vices by providing a platform for positive engagement through sports.

The competition will feature teams from 11 local government areas in Gombe State, with a total prize pool of N10 million to incentivize and reward competitive excellence.
