Gombe Tertiary Institutions Begin Two-Week Warning Strike

The Joint Union of Gombe State Tertiary Institutions (JOUGTIN) has commenced a two-week warning strike starting at midnight on September 2, 2026, due to the Gombe State government's alleged failure to implement and pay outstanding staff welfare entitlements. This union includes the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.

The decision to strike followed a 14-day ultimatum issued on August 17, 2026, which expired on August 31, 2026, without satisfactory government response. JOUGTIN stated that if no tangible feedback or commitment is received during the warning strike, they would escalate to an indefinite strike.

The union expressed willingness to negotiate with the government to resolve the issues and urged for urgent intervention to maintain industrial harmony and effective functioning of tertiary education in Gombe State.
