Lagos Varsity Workers Demand Action or Face Strike

Workers’ unions in Lagos State-owned universities, represented by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Lagos State government to address outstanding welfare demands. The unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), are demanding the immediate implementation of agreements reached with the Federal Government, effective from January 1, 2026.

They also seek the release of funds for a N50,000 palliative announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the May 1, 2026 Workers’ Day celebration, which has not been paid to university workers. The ultimatum was announced during a press briefing at the Lagos State University, Ojo campus.

Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, ASUU-LASU Chairman, expressed dissatisfaction with the government's unclear communication regarding the payment, stating that while civil servants received the palliative, university workers were excluded despite multiple engagements with government officials.

The unions warned that failure to meet their demands would lead to an indefinite strike.
