Ondo State Varsities Begin Indefinite Strike Over Allowances

On September 2, 2026, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Ondo State-owned tertiary institutions announced a total and indefinite strike due to the state government's failure to implement the Federal Government/Unions Agreement and pay associated allowances. The strike involves the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The affected institutions include Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo. The decision followed a 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government, which had previously announced a 60% increase in subventions to all tertiary institutions but failed to fulfill this commitment.

The unions demanded the unconditional payment of CONTTA and other allowances from January 2026 to date. The JAC stated that the strike would continue until the government addresses the outstanding issues.
