Protests Erupt in Rivers State Over Northern Traders

Protests in Rivers State were triggered by the death of Nchelem Samuel Festu, who was allegedly stabbed by a northern motorcyclist on February 10. This incident led to accusations against northern motorcyclists of involvement in criminal activities, including rape and kidnapping.

Residents blocked the Port Harcourt International Airport road, demanding an immediate ban on commercial motorcyclists from northern areas and the closure of a dump site allegedly operated by northerners. The situation escalated when Zakara Afaaruwu was accused of stabbing trader Higightor Wenem during a dispute at the oil mill market, resulting in further violence against northern traders.

Musa Saidu, chairman of the Hausa community in Rivers State, expressed sadness over the killings and warned against associating the entire Hausa community with crime. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to the fatal stabbing, and investigations are ongoing.

The protests reflect deep-seated animosities and misunderstandings between communities in the region.
