Abiodun: Governors Must Account for Subsidy Gains

On Thursday, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun asserted that state governors, rather than President Bola Tinubu, should be responsible for explaining the utilization of funds gained from the removal of petrol subsidies. Speaking at an All Progressives Congress rally at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Abiodun argued that governors are better positioned to account for the increased allocations resulting from the subsidy removal.

He questioned the rationale behind calls for Tinubu to explain the funds, stating, “It is we (governors) that should make such explanations because it is we, state governors, that collect the money.” Abiodun noted that these funds have been directed towards financing infrastructure projects and support programs, including the construction of airports, roads, schools, and housing. He also dismissed the opposition parties' chances in the upcoming 2027 elections, claiming the APC would defeat them decisively.

The financial implications of the subsidy removal have become a significant topic ahead of the elections, with figures like former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar demanding accountability regarding the funds.
