Nigerian Governors' Offices Cost N512bn in Six Months

In the first six months of 2026, thirty-three state governments in Nigeria incurred expenditures totaling N512.10bn on Government Houses, Governors’ Offices, and travel and transport. This amount is approximately 4,713 times greater than the combined six-month salary of Nigeria’s 36 governors, which is N108.65m, given that each governor's monthly salary is N503,000.

The breakdown of the expenditure shows that N420.01bn was allocated to Government House and Governor’s Office operations, while N92.09bn was spent on travel and transport. This analysis highlights that the governors' salaries represent only 0.02 percent of the total expenditure on executive offices and travel.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, noted that his salary is lower than that of some senior civil servants, such as permanent secretaries who earn N900,000 monthly. The figures reflect the substantial public cost associated with maintaining the executive offices of state governors, raising questions about the overall fiscal implications of such expenditures.
