Legal Battle Between Action Peoples Party and INEC Over Deregistration in Nigeria

The Action Peoples Party (APP) has taken legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the Federal High Court in Owerri, Nigeria. The APP seeks to challenge INEC's decision to deregister the party, citing constitutional provisions and Supreme Court precedents.

INEC had deregistered the APP in February 2020, a decision affirmed by the Supreme Court in March 2022. The APP argues that there is no legal basis for INEC to retain the party in its database.

The APP's Executive Director, Franklin Ngoforo, asserts that the party's deregistration was lawful and that no court order exists to restrain it. In response, the APP's Public Secretary, Cajethan Duke, dismisses the legal action as propaganda and emphasizes the party's right to participate in elections.
