Urgent Call for Flood Preparedness in Abia State

The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy Development (FENRAD) has called for early preparedness and resilience against flooding in Abia State, South East Nigeria. This call follows a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicting increased rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country.

FENRAD's Executive Director, Comrad Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, stated that flooding disasters are no longer isolated incidents but recurring consequences of climate change and environmental mismanagement. The organization highlighted that communities in Abia State remain vulnerable due to blocked drainage systems, poor waste management practices, unregulated physical development, inadequate public awareness, and weak investment in climate-resilient infrastructure.

FENRAD urged the Abia State government and other South East states to activate emergency preparedness mechanisms and identify flood-prone communities. They emphasized the importance of intensifying public enlightenment campaigns through various media to ensure residents understand flood risks and appropriate safety measures.
