Alumni Association Opposes Privatization of Unity Schools

Barrister Chukwuyere Izuogu, the President of the Old Students Association of the Federal Government College, Ilorin, expressed strong opposition to any potential privatization of Federal Unity Colleges. He warned that such a move would significantly limit access to quality education for children from low-income families.

Izuogu's concerns arose following reports that the federal government might consider transferring management of some Unity Schools to alumni associations or private entities. He emphasized that this would be detrimental to low-income earners, stating, “any such move will totally deprive children of the low income earners in our society of education.” This statement was made during the inauguration of new facilities at the college, including solar-powered boreholes and 3D printing machines.

Izuogu shared his personal experience of attending FGC Ilorin due to its affordability, highlighting the importance of Unity Schools in providing equal educational opportunities across Nigeria. He urged the federal government to maintain the current ownership structure to preserve affordable education.
