Guendouzi and Greenwood Sanctioned by UEFA After Brawl

Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood have been sanctioned by UEFA for their roles in a confrontation following Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon on August 30, 2023. Fenerbahce won the second leg 2-1 in France, advancing 3-2 on aggregate.

Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon's rivals Marseille, received a four-match ban from UEFA club competitions, with two matches suspended for one year, and was fined 50,000 euros for “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators, and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.” Greenwood, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille in the summer, received a one-match suspended ban and a 30,000-euro fine for similar violations. Lyon's goalkeeping coach, Antonio Ferreira, was handed a five-match ban, with two matches suspended, for “serious assault.” Both clubs were fined 50,000 euros for their teams' conduct.

Fenerbahce is reviewing UEFA's decisions and considering arbitration and appeal processes. Guendouzi expressed feeling “disrespected” by Lyon supporters who insulted his family.
