Boko Haram Intensifies Guerrilla Warfare in Northeast Nigeria

Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province have escalated their guerrilla warfare tactics in Nigeria's northeast, particularly in Borno and Yobe states. Recent months have seen a surge in surprise night attacks and ambushes targeting military formations, leading to substantial casualties and undermining troop morale.

Notably, in March alone, the Nigerian military reported the deaths of three commanding officers, including Major UI Mairiga and Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faruq, during assaults on military bases. The insurgents have successfully overrun military installations, inflicting casualties and looting weapons.

For instance, on March 9, they overran a military base in Kukawa, killing Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faruq and several soldiers. The pattern of attacks has raised concerns among security analysts regarding the persistent threat posed by these insurgent groups despite ongoing military operations in the region.
