Gunmen Abduct 14 Passengers in Benue, Five Rescued

On the night of August 13, 2026, gunmen abducted 14 passengers traveling on an 18-seater commercial bus along the Otukpo–Adoka road in Benue State. The bus was ambushed between the Ankpechi and Omutele axes of Ohimini Local Government Area while en route from Enugu State to Abuja.

A local resident, Ochai, reported that the gunmen forced all passengers into the surrounding forest. The Benue State Police Command, represented by spokesperson DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident and stated that a coordinated rescue operation was launched early the following morning.

This operation involved an exchange of gunfire with the kidnappers, resulting in the successful rescue of five victims, including a four-year-old boy. One rescued individual sustained a gunshot injury and was taken to a medical facility in Otukpo.

The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are intensifying efforts to secure the release of the remaining nine victims while ensuring their safety. Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu assured the public that efforts would continue until all victims are rescued.
