Gwamna Seeks Police Probe Over Fake News Campaign

Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Gombe State, has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police regarding a coordinated campaign of cyberbullying, criminal defamation, and fake news intended to tarnish his reputation ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Gwamna has requested an immediate investigation by the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre, with INTERPOL's involvement, due to intelligence indicating that some perpetrators may be operating from outside Nigeria. The petition identifies several social media accounts that allegedly spread false claims about Gwamna's arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which he denies.

The petition describes these publications as part of a disinformation campaign aimed at misleading the public and damaging his reputation. It urges the Police to gather digital evidence, identify the campaign's sponsors, and prosecute those responsible.

Political analysts suggest that this situation reflects the desperate tactics emerging as the Gombe governorship race intensifies, with Gwamna's rising profile unsettling some opposition factions.
