Leaders Call for Unity and Responsible Politics in Nigeria

At the seventh National Discourse titled “Interrogating Nigeria’s Democracy in the Context of Multiple Diversity,” held at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the Senator representing Edo West, and Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, the former Kano State governor, advocated for national unity and responsible politics.

Hamzat stated that Nigeria's political challenges stem from the failure to reconcile its cultural heritage with the adopted Western democratic system. He urged for greater religious tolerance and the promotion of family values.

Oshiomhole emphasized the rejection of identity politics, advocating for the election of leaders based on competence rather than ethnicity. Shekarau, as the special guest of honour, called for a deeper understanding of religious teachings to promote peace and justice.

Imam Nojeem Jimoh, the National Amir of The Companions, organized the discourse to explore how Nigeria's democracy can better manage its diversity. Prof. Liasu Adele Jinadu highlighted the exploitation of ethnicity by political elites and advocated for a political system prioritizing citizenship and human development.
