Hamzat and Oshiomhole Call for Unity Beyond Ethnicity

On August 23, 2026, Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor, addressed attendees at The Companion’s event titled 'Interrogating Nigeria’s Democracy in the Context of Multiple Diversity' held at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG, Akoka, Yaba.

Hamzat called for Nigerians to consciously forge a shared national identity that transcends ethnic, religious, and cultural loyalties. He emphasized the need for the political system to manage Nigeria's diversity without allowing it to become a source of division.

Hamzat advocated for greater religious tolerance and respect among different faiths. Adams Oshiomhole, Senator representing Edo North, delivered the keynote address, urging Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious politics in favor of leadership based on competence.

Ibrahim Shekarau, the chairman of the occasion and former Governor, echoed the sentiment that there is no justification for religious conflict, highlighting the common values of love and respect found in all major religions.
