Oshiomhole Advocates for Unity Beyond Ethnic Divides

At the 7th National Discourse of The Companion, held at the University of Lagos, Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor, addressed the need for Nigeria to dismantle ethnic and religious fault lines to promote growth and accountability. He stated that ethnicity should not play a role in democracy, as it is often exploited by politicians to evade accountability.

Oshiomhole shared his personal experiences, asserting that ethnic politics is dysfunctional and should not dictate leadership choices. He emphasized that Nigerians can unite in the face of common challenges, such as economic hardship, which does not discriminate.

He criticized the manipulation of religion for violence and called for a fairer society that provides opportunities for all. Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, echoed the need for a stronger national identity that transcends ethnic and religious differences, acknowledging their deep roots in Nigeria's social and political life.
