Headies Defends Inclusion of Gospel Artistes at Awards

The Headies organizers issued a statement on August 31, 2026, rejecting claims that gospel and inspirational artistes are being overlooked at the annual music awards. This response followed concerns raised by Afrogospel singer Gaise Baba, who questioned the limited opportunities for gospel musicians in major categories.

The Headies emphasized that faith-based musicians are qualified to compete alongside other genres and cited examples of successful gospel artists, including Lara George, Kefee, Nikki Laoye, and Timi Dakolo, who have won major awards. Timi Dakolo notably won three awards in one night, including Recording of the Year.

The organizers defended the Best Inspirational Single category, introduced in 2022, stating it was meant to provide additional recognition for inspirational music, not to restrict gospel songs from competing in other categories. They affirmed that gospel musicians can enter any category if their songs meet the necessary requirements.
