Heavy Gunfire Erupts Near Niger's Airport, Sparking Panic Among Residents

Heavy gunfire and explosions were reported near Niamey's international airport in Niger, prompting residents to seek safety. The airport, which includes an air force base, is situated around 10 kilometers from the presidential palace in the capital city.

The country has been plagued by jihadist attacks, with a recent event involving the overthrow of the civilian president in 2023 by Abdourahaman Tiani, the head of the junta. The shooting began shortly before midnight and lasted for about two hours before calm was restored.

Local residents reported seeing streaks of light in the sky and hearing loud explosions. Online activist Ibrahim Bana urged people to defend the country, while the airport serves as a key hub for joint forces combating jihadist groups in the region.

Niger's military leadership has received support from French and US forces to address the escalating terrorist activities. Additionally, the creation of a 5,000-strong joint military force has been announced to enhance security operations in the region.

The region has witnessed significant casualties due to jihadist violence, with nearly 2,000 people killed in 2025.
