18-Year-Old Nathan Thomas Becomes Youngest Professor

Nathan Thomas achieved the title of the world’s youngest professor at the age of 18 years and 346 days when he was appointed to teach COP 2270: C for Engineers at Miami Dade College in Florida, United States, in August 2023. This accomplishment broke a 306-year-old record previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at 19.

Thomas was also 16 days younger than Alia Sabur, the youngest female professor, who achieved her record in 2008. His academic journey began at age 10 when he enrolled at Miami Dade College, later transferring to Florida International University at 14.

By 18, he had completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering with honors. Thomas expressed that age does not hinder the learning environment, focusing on helping students grasp complex concepts.

He credited his mother for fostering his early interest in mathematics and engineering, which significantly influenced his academic path.
