House Probes N174.26bn Agricultural Fund Scandal

The House of Representatives in Abuja has resolved to investigate the alleged failure to release N174.26 billion meant for agricultural intervention. The committee, chaired by Hon.

Bello Ka OJ, urged relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to fully cooperate in the inquiry. The investigation follows a motion adopted in late January, focusing on donor funds from the African Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The committee's mandate includes examining the reasons for the non-release of the N174.26 billion intervention fund and reviewing the high costs of fertilizers that harm farmers and undermine food production across Nigeria. The situation is critical, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency on food security in July 2023, prompting donor support for agricultural programs.

Currently, N55.30 billion awaits release to support 280,000 wheat farmers and 150,000 rice farmers for the 2024-2025 dry season. The committee warns that delays in fund disbursement could severely impact the 2025 harvest and create risks for the 2026 farming season.
