Zamfara Governor Rejects N300m Ransom for Kidnapped Brothers

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal disclosed that he rejected a N300 million ransom demand for his brothers, who were kidnapped in 2019. He stated that he would not pay any ransom, asserting that such payments only incentivize criminal behavior.

Lawal emphasized that his brothers spent three months in captivity without a ransom being paid. He argued that the payment of ransoms strengthens criminal networks and leads to an increase in kidnapping incidents.

Lawal reiterated his support for establishing a state police force, as he believes the current security agencies lack the necessary command and control to effectively tackle insecurity. He criticized the Nigerian police for inadequate funding and poor welfare, which hampers their operational effectiveness.

Lawal mentioned that the Zamfara State Government has invested in security operations, purchasing 500 operational vehicles and 35 armored personnel carriers over the past three years to combat banditry and violent crime.
