Kaduna's $62.8M Initiative to Enroll 100,000 Children

The Kaduna state government is utilizing a $62.8 million education intervention, the Reaching Out-of-School Children (ROOSC) Project, to return 100,000 out-of-school children to classrooms over four years. This initiative follows a mapping exercise that identified 187,719 children currently out of school in the state.

Ezra Angai, the Project Coordinator, reported that approximately 360,000 households were visited to gather data on children's educational status. The project, supported by several organizations including the Islamic Development Bank and UNICEF, aims to construct 102 new schools and renovate 170 others.

It also provides teaching materials, uniforms, and menstrual hygiene kits. The program integrates Sangaya learners into formal education and employs the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP) for older children.

Additionally, it includes radio-based learning for children in hard-to-reach areas and assessments for children with disabilities. A four-tier monitoring system ensures that children who return to school remain enrolled.
