NIMC Database Aids Arrest of Boko Haram Commanders

On a Friday announcement at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, revealed that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database played a crucial role in the arrest of seven known Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders returning from Hajj in 2026.

The suspects were apprehended at Katsina Airport upon their arrival from Mecca. This operation was part of ongoing government efforts to integrate Nigeria's identity management system, allowing security agencies to verify identities in real-time using local and international databases.

The arrests were made possible through the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, which aims to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture and enhance collaboration among security agencies. The Minister emphasized that the current administration is focused on improving the country's capacity to tackle identity theft and terrorism financing, with the NIMC's identification system already linked to immigration databases and Interpol.
