Nigeria's Path to 2030 World Cup: FIFA's Insights

FIFA assessed Nigeria's Super Eagles, stating that the team has the talent to qualify for the 2030 FIFA World Cup but must develop a more stable football structure. Nigeria has reached the Round of 16 in three of its six World Cup appearances (1994, 1998, and 2014) but failed to qualify for the last two editions (2018 and 2026).

During the 2026 qualifying campaign, Nigeria finished second behind South Africa in Group C of the CAF qualifiers, advancing to the second round. The Super Eagles defeated Gabon 4-1 after extra time but lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final qualifying fixture via penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Despite these setbacks, FIFA recognized Nigeria as one of Africa's football powerhouses, emphasizing that the country's chances of returning to the World Cup in 2030 depend more on establishing a stable system than on player quality.
