Super Eagles Aim for World Cup 2030 After Spain Win

The Super Eagles, Nigeria's national football team, congratulated Spain on their victory over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, which ended 1-0 after extra time. The Super Eagles shared a message on their official X account, expressing their ambition to return to football's biggest stage at the next World Cup in 2030.

Nigeria has not qualified for the last two World Cups, including the 2022 tournament in Qatar, marking an eight-year absence. The upcoming World Cup in 2026 will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring an expanded format of 48 teams, which increases Africa's allocation to nine automatic qualifying spots and additional intercontinental playoff opportunities.

The Super Eagles' recent failure to qualify was compounded by a playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, following a 1-1 draw and a penalty shootout loss. The 2030 tournament will also commemorate the centenary of the World Cup, with matches scheduled to take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
