Amaechi Paid Pregnant Women N10,000 for Antenatal Care

Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State and current presidential running mate for the African Democratic Congress, disclosed that his administration paid pregnant women N10,000 each to encourage attendance at antenatal care. This initiative aimed to reduce the state's maternal and child mortality rates, which were notably high, with Rivers State ranked second on the maternal-child mortality index during his tenure from 2007 to 2015.

Amaechi explained that his administration established health centres in every village, each staffed with two doctors and nurses, to facilitate this program. He noted that the financial incentive attracted many women to the health centres, which were particularly busy on Fridays.

Amaechi also highlighted the link between women's health and economic growth, stating that 40 percent of women in Nigeria are farmers and that improving their health and education is crucial for better leadership and development outcomes.
