Rubbish Mound Collapse in Conakry Claims 30 Lives

A significant tragedy occurred in Conakry, Guinea, where at least 30 individuals lost their lives due to the collapse of a large rubbish mound at a waste site in the Dar-es-Salam neighborhood. The incident happened around 02:00 local time following heavy overnight rainfall.

The government reported that 22 people were injured, six of whom sustained serious injuries. Military personnel and other resources were deployed to search through the debris for survivors.

Local resident Lancine Sylla expressed fears of a higher death toll, having already confirmed the retrieval of 18 bodies taken to the morgue. One woman recounted the heartbreaking loss of all five of her children in the disaster.

As rescue operations continue, officials and residents worry that the final death toll could increase. The Dar-es-Salam waste site has a history of deadly incidents, including a 2017 collapse that resulted in 10 fatalities, raising concerns about waste management in a city struggling with infrastructure issues.
