ICC Dismisses Nigeria Kidnapping Investigation Petition

The International Criminal Court (ICC) dismissed a petition on September 1, 2026, which sought an investigation into alleged systemic kidnappings in Nigeria as potential crimes against humanity. The petition, submitted by an unidentified individual, was registered as ICC-RoC46(3)-01/26 and was transmitted to the President of the Pre-Trial Division on August 24, 2026.

It was assigned to Pre-Trial Chamber II on August 26, where it was reviewed and subsequently dismissed. The panel included Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, who presided, along with Judges Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godínez and Haykel Ben Mahfoudh.

Following the dismissal, the Federal Government, represented by Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, expressed concerns regarding the procedure that allowed the anonymous petition to reach the chamber without verification of its source. Fagbemi stated that the process was troubling and emphasized the importance of the court's competence in handling such filings.
