ICRC Calls for Full Capacity Operation of Zungeru Plant

The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has emphasized that the $1.3 billion Zungeru Hydropower Project must operate at its full capacity of 700 megawatts. Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, the Director General of the ICRC, convened a stakeholders’ meeting to address the plant's current output of approximately 350 megawatts.
Stakeholders included the Federal Ministry of Power, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), and the concessionaire, Penstock Limited. Ewalefoh stated that the government is committed to resolving power challenges and that the Zungeru plant, as part of a public-private partnership (PPP), cannot function below capacity.
A final report regarding Zungeru and other PPP-operated power plants will be submitted to the President, and stakeholders have agreed to reconvene to address identified issues. The Zungeru plant is Nigeria's largest hydropower project and is crucial for flood protection and irrigation.
