ICRC Enhances Oversight of Zungeru Hydropower Project

The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) is intensifying its regulatory oversight of the Zungeru Hydropower Project, a $1.3 billion initiative with a capacity of 700 megawatts. Currently, the plant generates approximately 350 megawatts for the National Grid.
This effort aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's directive to unlock Nigeria's power sector potential, as stated in his 2026 Democracy Day speech. The ICRC convened a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja, involving the Federal Ministry of Power, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), and the concessionaire, Penstock Limited.
Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, ICRC Director-General, emphasized that the plant must not operate below capacity while addressing the country's power challenges. He reiterated the importance of implementing concession agreements to ensure sustainability and value for money for Nigerians, as outlined in the ICRC Act 2005.
