Aziz Abdul Aims for Uganda's First Boxing Medal in 36 Years

Aziz Abdul, known by the nickname Ringo, is set to compete against England's Damar Thomas in the quarter-finals of the 90+kg category at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. A win for Abdul will secure at least a bronze medal, marking Uganda's first boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games since the Auckland edition in 1990.

The 25-year-old boxer expressed his determination to replace the gold chain he wears with a gold medal, stating, “Our first medal will be won on Wednesday (today). No excuse.” He emphasized his dream of returning home with a gold medal and making his country proud.

When questioned about his lineage as Idi Amin's grandson, Abdul refrained from expressing pride but acknowledged the mixed perceptions of his grandfather's legacy, stating, “It’s not good to say something negative about someone who is not there.”.
