IG Disu Mourns Slain Officer After Oyo Rescue Operation

Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu expressed condolences for the loss of Sergeant John Abena, who died during a joint security operation aimed at rescuing schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State. Disu commended the bravery and success of the operation, which involved multiple security agencies.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by officers, emphasizing that they deserve to be mourned and celebrated for their service. Disu confirmed that Abena sustained injuries during the operation and assured that the police force would continue to support the welfare of Abena's family and other injured officers.

The operation, which took place on May 15, 2026, resulted in the abduction of 49 pupils, a teacher, and a toddler, with the successful rescue of 44 victims on July 10, 2026. Disu called for public cooperation with security agencies to enhance safety and security in the community.
