Nigeria Police Force Targets Mortgage Funds for Housing

The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is pursuing multi-billion-naira mortgage financing to enhance affordable housing for its personnel. Disu announced this initiative during an inspection of 21 police barracks and housing projects in Lagos, emphasizing the need to utilize funds from the Police Mortgage and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

The proposed financing model aims to reduce reliance on direct government funding by integrating mortgage finance, private equity, and public-sector support. The focus will be on providing affordable accommodation for the rank and file of the police.

Disu noted that many police barracks have deteriorated significantly and some will require demolition and reconstruction. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, mentioned that the state government is collaborating with private developers to redevelop police barracks, targeting approximately 1,000 housing units at Ijeh Barracks by February 2027.
