NSEMA Warns FG of Flood Risks from Distressed Kaduna Dam

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), led by Director General Abdullahi Baba-Arah, has raised alarms regarding structural distress and visible cracks at Kangimi Dam located in Kaduna State. In a statement, Baba-Arah emphasized that the dam's condition poses a significant risk of flooding to downstream communities in Kaduna State, Niger State, the Federal Capital Territory, and other adjacent areas.

He called for urgent technical assessments and coordinated preventive actions from relevant authorities, especially given the ongoing rainy season which heightens the risk of flooding across Nigeria. Baba-Arah warned that a significant structural failure could lead to a rapid flood emergency affecting multiple communities.

He urged local authorities and the federal government to take the situation seriously, establish emergency measures, conduct hydrological assessments, and create effective communication mechanisms for potentially affected communities. Additionally, he recommended the development of evacuation plans and safe assembly points to mitigate risks.
