NIHSA Identifies 166 Flood-Vulnerable Communities in Kaduna

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has identified 166 communities in Kaduna State as vulnerable to river flooding, issuing a warning of heightened risks for flash and river floods as rainfall peaks. Mr.

Yusuf Yakong, a Senior Hydrologist at NIHSA, provided this warning during a joint meeting of the 2026 Flood Strategic and Tactical Response Teams in Kaduna. This alert is based on forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which indicated that Kaduna is among the states at risk of flooding.

NiMet has forecast flash floods, while NIHSA's advisory for July 21 to July 27 classified Kaduna under medium river flood risk. The vulnerable communities include 166 in Lere Local Government Area, alongside 16 schools, three health facilities, and three places of worship.

Yakong noted that July, August, and September are peak rainfall months, increasing the likelihood of flooding. Mubarak Zakari, Director of Relief and Disaster Management at KADSEMA, stated that the agency is operationally ready and has intensified surveillance of vulnerable locations.
