IMSU ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Agreement

On August 10, 2026, the Imo State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced a total and indefinite strike, citing the Imo State Government's failure to implement a 2025 agreement signed with the Federal Government. The announcement was made during a press conference in Owerri by branch Chairman Stephen Oguji and Secretary Lazarus Chikwendu.

The agreement, signed on December 23, 2025, was set to take effect from January 1, 2026, aimed at enhancing the welfare of academic staff. Despite multiple engagements with the university administration and a 21-day ultimatum issued, there was no meaningful response.

ASUU-IMSU expressed disappointment over the lack of implementation, especially as other state-owned universities had begun to implement the agreement. The union also highlighted issues such as the retention of IMSU in the Treasury single account, non-payment of promotion arrears since 2016, and withholding of check-off dues.

ASUU-IMSU vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.
