Enugu State Joins Global Methane Action Coalition

During Climate Action Week in London, the Enugu State Government, represented by Prof. Chidieber Onyia on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah, signed a landmark partnership agreement with the Subnational Methane Action Coalition (SMAC).

This coalition comprises 180 global regions dedicated to achieving net-zero futures. The signing ceremony highlighted Enugu's challenges with municipal solid waste management, particularly the unmanaged disposal sites that contribute significantly to methane emissions.

Governor Mbah emphasized that addressing methane reduction is not only a climate issue but also a public health and urban development concern. The state has already initiated several steps towards climate action, including establishing a Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, enacting climate-related legal frameworks, and developing a climate change policy action plan.

Enugu's commitment to the SMAC is seen as a strategic move to enhance its environmental stewardship and economic development, particularly in transforming its former coal-producing region into a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
