Lagos State Launches First Greenhouse Gas Registry in Nigeria

The Lagos State Government has launched the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR), establishing it as the first sub-national greenhouse gas emissions registry in Nigeria. This initiative is part of Lagos State's environmental sustainability agenda and is seen as a significant milestone in its climate action efforts.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), stated that the Registry is a strategic platform for measuring, monitoring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions across key economic sectors.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu's commitment to sustainable development through innovative environmental policies is reflected in this initiative. Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health, described the Registry as a landmark initiative that positions Lagos at the forefront of climate governance in Nigeria and Africa.

He emphasized the importance of credible emissions data for evidence-based policies, climate finance attraction, resilience strengthening, and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
