INEC Restores Suppressed Constituencies Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the restoration of suppressed constituencies in Benue, Delta, Jigawa, and Kogi states, following a court judgment. INEC Chairman Mohammed Haruna stated that the commission will conduct political party primaries for these constituencies from June 16 to June 25, 2026.

This restoration is in accordance with the powers conferred to the commission by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, and the amended Electoral Act of 2026. The specific constituencies being restored include various state constituencies in Benue, such as Nyamatsor, Ukum, and Afia Konshisha, as well as constituencies in Delta, Jigawa, and Kogi states.

Haruna emphasized that the timeline for these activities has already been published and that the arrangements for the political party requests must be submitted prior to the scheduled primary dates, ensuring participation in the 2027 general elections.
