Reps Order INEC to Restore State Constituencies in Benue

On Tuesday, the Nigerian House of Representatives passed a resolution mandating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore suppressed state constituencies in Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State. This decision followed a motion brought by Philip Agbe, a member representing the Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, and seconded by Kelechi Nwogu from the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in Rivers State.

The motion highlighted that these three LGAs had historically enjoyed representation through two distinct state constituencies each, which were suspended during a delimitation exercise. Agbe emphasized that the suppression of these constituencies negatively impacts the representation and development needs of the local population.

The House unanimously agreed to restore the constituencies by 2027, directing INEC to ensure compliance and interface with relevant stakeholders, including the Benue State government and the Attorney General of the Federation.
