INEC Sets September 19, 2026, for By-Elections in Four States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that by-elections will take place on September 19, 2026, to fill five vacant legislative seats across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states. The affected constituencies include Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Voting will occur at polling units within these constituencies, starting at 8:30 AM and concluding at 2:30 PM. The vacancies were created due to various reasons: the Gombe seat became vacant following the death of lawmaker Yaya Bauchi Tongo in June 2026; in Bauchi, the Sakwa seat was vacated due to the death of its former occupant, while the Disina seat was vacated after a resignation.

The Udu seat in Delta was declared vacant after Collins Egbetamah defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). In Kano, Rabiu Shuaibu left the Dawakin Kudu seat to contest a federal constituency seat, which he won in June.
