INEC Registers Over 9 Million Youths for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that 9,324,349 young Nigerians were newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration exercises. This announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, on Wednesday in Abuja during the investiture of nine Youth Ambassadors aimed at increasing youth participation in the upcoming 2027 general election.

Amupitan emphasized the significance of youth involvement in the electoral process, stating it helps shape electoral outcomes and boosts public confidence in democracy. The ambassadors are tasked with promoting voter awareness, countering misinformation, and encouraging active participation among young Nigerians.

Prof Kunle Ajayi, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Outreach and Partnership Committee, urged the ambassadors to oppose electoral violence and manipulation. Additionally, Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, represented by Mrs Lami Bature, called for the promotion of electoral awareness and responsible citizenship among the youth, emphasizing the need to combat misinformation and uphold the rule of law.
